The Airports of Jamaica (including map)
In Jamaica we have a saying that describes our island well, “We little but we Tallawah”. What this means is that, yes we are a small country, but we are strong, and we have what it takes to make it. This thought also proves true for air transportation in our country. Jamaica being the small country that it is, maintains several airports and aerodromes that are situated across the island and makes going to and fro a breeze. The island has 3 major international airports that do their part in providing a viable port of entry into the island.
Firstly we have the Sangster’s International Airport, located at the North east end of the island in sunny Montego Bay, the “Tourist Capital” of Jamaica. Sangster’s International is outfitted to handle international and domestic flights while catering to hotels, car rental companies and private transfers. Sangster’s International is an Airport customized to the visitor’s needs and wants. Numerous duty free shops and restaurants provide for travelers the first or last taste of what Jamaica has to offer. The Sangster’s International Airport is renowned, and is celebrated as the leading airport in the Caribbean. The World Travel Awards chose Sangster’s International as the winner of the title of the Caribbean’s Leading Airport in 2005. They have since won this title in running succession from the year 2009 to the present date.
The Norman Manley International Airport finds itself located in the country’s capital, Kingston. The city of Kingston is more business oriented in personality, but it bustles with night life and entertainment, making it an enjoyable destination. The Norman Manley international Airport dutifully provides access to the eastern side of the island, to parishes such as Portland and St Thomas. This allows you check out other attractions, like an adventurous hike to the famous Blue Mountains Peak. Not to be out done this airport also keeps its visitors and regular travelers in mind with multiple concession stands and shops for souvenirs.
The newest member of the international trio is the Ian Flemming International Airport formerly known as the Boscobel aerodrome which is a little more centrally located in the parish of St Mary. This was opened by the then Prime Minister, the right honorable, Bruce Golding on January 12, 2011. The airport got its famous name from the well-known writer Ian Flemming who wrote the popular James Bond series. This airport finds itself on a smaller scale when compared to the other two more well known airports, it however provides direct access to hot spots located in this area of the island.
In aid of this overall goal to make the island easily reached, are three smaller aerodromes; the Tinson Pen aerodrome, located in Kingston, the Ken Jones Aerodrome located in Port Antonio, and the Negril Aerodrome of course located in Negril. The cities of Port Antonio and Negril offer beautiful sights and things to do. You can go to the historic Folly Point Lighthouse in Port Antonio and even dive off the cliffs at Rick’s Café in Negril. The aerodromes cater to inland flights and help make maneuvering the island not too hard a task. The airports and aerodromes in Jamaica all do their part in bringing the opportunities needed that help make the beauty of the entire island more accessible to everyone.
